The King who Serves
We use the word “service” many different ways—especially at church.
· We call our missionaries “servants of the Lord.”
· We call pastors “ministers” which means “servants.”
· Deacon comes from a NT word that means “servant.”
· Even lay people will say “Oh, I’m just serving the Lord.”
Maybe sometimes we wonder, “What’s the point of all this service?”
In Mark’s gospel we see Jesus fulfills 2 roles. He’s the King—casting out demons, healing the sick, feeding the multitudes, walking on water, raising the dead.
But in this passage we come to the theme verse of Mark’s gospel—10:45. Where we see another theme—the theme of service.
Jesus is a King who serves.
Notice the word “minister” or “servant” in v. 43.
And then v. 44 servant really refers to “a slave.”
