 1.     What things in life can cause us to feel unwanted or rejected?

2.     Why do many Americans dread Valentine’s Day?

3.     How does “elect exiles” (1) seem like a contradiction?

4.     Why do you think being elected by God often causes believers to be rejected by the world?

5.     How does God’s choosing us cause humility (like the old Native American chieftain felt)? Did God see anything in us that would cause Him to choose us?

6.     How was this truth of God’s election especially comforting to Gentiles who were strangers to the covenants of promise (Eph. 2:12) and who had been living lives of moral decadence and alcohol addiction (1 Pet. 4:3)?

7.     Were the Gentiles grafted into God’s family as a divine afterthought? How does “elect according to the foreknowledge of God” (2) speak to this?
