VOLUME 5 - Division and Defiance

The story of the divided kingdom reveals the many warnings God’s people received—warnings to seek repentance from their sinful, idolatrous ways and turn to God. Because God is holy, good, and loving, He promised a new covenant for His people: one forever written on their hearts.

UNIT 13: A TROUBLED KINGDOM

Solomon’s unfaithfulness to God led to a divided and troubled kingdom. Rather than seek the Lord wholeheartedly, the people of Israel and Judah turned to worship worthless idols. Yet, God did not forsake His people. Through the prophet Elijah, God demonstrated His presence, power, and preeminence as the one true God.

BIG TRUTH QUESTION AND ANSWER: How many gods are there? There is one true God who alone deserves worship.

UNIT 14: THE NORTHERN KINGDOM

Although the Northern Kingdom continued to worship idols, God provided prophets to warn His people—and even foreign nations—to turn away from their sin. While Nineveh repented and was spared God’s judgment, the nation of Israel refused to worship God alone. As a result, God judged Israel’s idolatrous sin by allowing the nation of Assyria to destroy the Northern Kingdom.

BIG TRUTH QUESTION AND ANSWER: Why do Christians continue to sin? Christians continue to sin because we still have a sin nature, but when Jesus returns, He will make us sinless like Him.

The Southern Kingdom of Judah experienced the reign of both good and evil kings. Yet, the people’s allegiance was divided between the worship of God and the idols of foreign nations. God sent prophets to warn the people to turn back to Him, but they did not listen. God disciplined His people by sending them into captivity in Babylon but promised they would one day return home.

BIG TRUTH QUESTION AND ANSWER: What is God like? God is holy, good, and loving.
